Has Zohran Mamdani, New York City Mayor, Become a Political Role Model for Andy Burnham?

Many clever journalistic minds are following Andy Burnham’s lead by revisiting the pre-neoliberal era of Denis Healey's 1970s chancellorship; a parallel made even more striking now that another Healey holds the keys to the Treasury.

However, a look sideways across the pond to the perma-campaigning of in-demand Mayor Zohran Mamdani in New York City surely gives the clearest pointers to PM Andy’s early media and social media blitz.

Mayor Zohran’s triumphant ‘airwaves’-driven November Mayoral win polled over a million votes and won four out of five NYC boroughs. During the World Cup, he was positioned as the welcoming face of the USA through a raft of affordability initiatives, showing him firmly on the side of ‘native’ and non-native New Yorkers alike.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham, taking full advantage of Parliamentary recess here, has followed suit (or Private White jacket) with a week of eye-catching ‘early wins’ on affordability, helping every postcode, that have the public and press purring with delight for the most part.

From DJing to dancing, pool diving in a suit in East Harlem to ‘Manchester clothes’, Zohran and Andy are blazing a trail in light touch, sure-footed, political ‘human’. Many more politicians worldwide will surely now follow down the same path – showing the hinterland so beloved of the earlier Chancellor Healey.

As Comms professionals, we naturally lap up the social media video improvisations and presentation ‘imperfections’, like the poor lighting pioneered by Zohran’s Creative Director for Video Donald Borenstein, or Andy Burnham’s ‘direct to camera’ Instas on everything from FIFA to Twiglets and other pub snacks. For Andy, these set off echoes of a certain pipe-smoking, ‘pound in your pocket’, man-of-the-people Prime Minister from the North West of England. But these posts also tread new ground for effective social engagement in 2026, in tandem with Mayor Zohran.

Leading with authentic and effective media and social media activity, Mayors and former Mayors are quickly and directly stepping forward to rule the world, sending messages of hope and inspiration, inclusion and growth.

Ultimately, delivery on promises, effectively and within budget, will define the future of Zohran Mamdani and Andy Burnham - from affordable New York City rent levels to ‘good growth in every postcode’. Yet, the journeys towards those goals will be more relatable and engaging than ever before, using new, continuously evolving media and social media strategies.
